A Rigorous and Direct Route to Gibbs Free Energies of Solids
Predicting the stability of crystalline materials is essential for developing advanced materials and pharmaceuticals. Researchers developed a new thermodynamic integration framework that calculates Gibbs free energies entirely under constant-pressure conditions, improving accuracy while simplifying the workflow. The method was validated using ice polymorphs and CsPbI₃ and relied on more than 10,000 GPU hours on VSC infrastructure.

VSC's new Tier-1 supercomputer sofia ranks among the world's most powerful and energy-efficient systems
The VSC Tier-1 supercomputer sofia has made a strong international debut, ranking 222nd in the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers and 41st in the Green500 ranking for energy efficiency. Hosted by VUB at the Nexus Datacenter in Zellik, sofia combines advanced computing power with a strong focus on sustainability. Starting in July 2026, it will support Flemish researchers in AI, climate science, medical research, and large-scale simulations.
