The PIDGIN Project at Hasselt University is an interdisciplinary collaboration between oncologists, pathologists, biomedical scientists, and data experts. Its mission: to develop a more precise method for diagnosing lung cancer by analysing tumour heterogeneity. Using advanced slide scanners, microscopic tissue samples are digitised into high-resolution images that can be accessed anywhere. These images are then processed using AI and machine learning to detect patterns invisible to the human eye. Key innovations include: • A U-Net algorithm to detect every cell in high-resolution tumour images. • Machine learning models trained with “ground truth” colourings to classify cell types without costly staining. • Statistical models to quantify tumour heterogeneity and study cell interactions for better insight into disease progression and treatment response. VSC played a vital role by providing: 1️⃣ Tier-1 data storage for secure and scalable access. 2️⃣ High-performance computing to train deep neural networks. 3️⃣ Large-memory infrastructure to process massive image datasets. This work enables pathologists to make more accurate, objective, and reproducible diagnoses — paving the way for personalised lung cancer treatment. Meet Stijn Verwulgen, the ingenious CEO of Innovante, who has revolutionized cycling with his groundbreaking invention - FAAST, the ultimate training bike! FAAST is not your average bike; it's a cutting-edge cycling simulator that mimics the physics of real cycling. By continuously monitoring the cyclist's posture in 3D, FAAST calculates the drag coefficient and required power output in real-time, delivering an authentic cycling experience like never before! To calculate the aerodynamic drag for each user, FAAST offers two approaches. One is a low-end solution that plugs in a standard value in the software.
