Advancing Quantum Computing in Europe
We are thrilled to announce that VSC is now a proud partner in the EuroSSQ-HPC consortium, working alongside leading European institutions to support the development of a new EuroHPC quantum computer. This state-of-the-art quantum computer, hosted by SURF at the Amsterdam Science Park, represents a major leap forward in our access to this computational technology. The quantum computer will allow students, researchers and businesses in Europe to use a unique hybrid combination between a quantum and a 'regular' supercomputer.
Carl Mensch, VSC Representative: “Quantum computers are evolving rapidly. We are very excited to be part of this consortium to explore how quantum computers integrate with modern supercomputers and investigate their impact on computational research in fields such as chemistry, physics, and AI.”
Why This Quantum Computer is Important:
This quantum computer project is part of the European efforts to provide access to diverse quantum computer technologies integrated into high-performance computing centers. It enables researchers to operate hybrid quantum computers and drive developments of promising applications in domains such as:
Drug Discovery and Chemistry: Quantum computing is used for quantum chemistry to describe molecular properties more accurately, which could significantly improve developments in fields like drug discovery, catalyst design, and material science.
Physics: Quantum algorithms are explored to manage the vast data challenges expected from upcoming large-scale particle physics experiments that are needed to deepen our understanding of the universe.
Artificial Intelligence: Innovative quantum machine learning algorithms are being developed to drive breakthroughs in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence.
VSC’s Role in the Project:
Through its UAntwerpen hub, VSC joins this pioneering consortium to contribute its expertise in high-performance computing and play a crucial role in integrating hybrid quantum and classical computing. As part of this partnership, we will provide training and support, enabling students, researchers, and businesses to access European infrastructure and advance quantum computing knowledge and applications.
