Can AI reliably detect freezing of gait across different Parkinson’s disease cohorts? Researchers tested a deep-learning model using wearable movement sensors across seven cohorts. The VSC Tier-1 supercomputer sofia has made a strong international debut, ranking 222nd in the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers and 41st in the Green500 ranking for energy efficiency. Hosted by VUB at the Nexus Datacenter in Zellik, sofia combines advanced computing power with a strong focus on sustainability. Starting in July 2026, it will support Flemish researchers in AI, climate science, medical research, and large-scale simulations.

By combining OCR models, vision-language tools, and expert corrections—with the help of VSC supercomputing—they’ve achieved high accuracy in transcribing complex handwritten climate tables.
